Tuesday 26th August away to Banbury Borough for the Burma Star Cup - 2nd leg

With a bit of cajoling we managed to bring the start time forward to 18.00 and completed the agreed 16 ends.  Initially it was a warm evening, if a little breezy, and most of us found the green, I use that word loosely, challenging.  Thanks must be extended to Finlay and Jasper for coming into the squad at short notice and they shared the role

After the home leg we were 20 points down and last night's result did little to improve this as it was a double draw with our winning two rinks and tying the score at 61 all.

Rink 1

Sandra Shallis, Paul Jones, Tony Bird and Bryan Ogilvie got off to slow start but a 5 and two 4s saw them run out comfortable winners with nine ends to their credit and a score of 22 - 11.

Rink 2

Steve Clarke, Chris Shallis, Phil French and Nigel Eley were well in control also taking nine ends and two 4s and a three saw them home by 10 points 20 - 10.

Rink 3

Yvonne Twomey, Richard Lawrence, Mick Wilkins and Chris Twomey struggled and despite picking up a five trailed in 11 - 18.

Rink 4

Jill Hart, Finlay and Jasper Jelfs, Mick Jelfs and Ted Eley found the going tough and could only manage six ends to return a score of 8 - 22.

In all fairness rinks 1 & 2 had the best of the "green" with 3 & 4 having to endure the effects of a lack of watering.

This means that the Burma Star Cup has a new home for 2025 and will be presented to them later in the year.

Thursday 21st August at home to Banbury Chestnuts

Now that the league has finished both clubs were able to extend the fixture to five triples and we took the opportunity to "stretch" our squad in Saturday's National Finals of the Men's Triples by playing them in their competition order.  More of that later.  Once again it was a chilly night and as the Captain had arranged to oversubscribe the 15 players required he took the opportunity to "sit this one out".  It was good to welcome Pat Clements back for her first game this season.  We were well supported by spectators and the Aunt Sally contingent kept Jenny and Tony on their toes all evening.

Overall it was a very tight game and we went down 2 rinks to 3 with a score of 68 - 72.  At the away fixture in May we won by 11 points 87 - 76 so there is very little between the two teams.  Many thanks to Jenny and Tony for running the bar all evening and to Chris and Maggie Skidmore for setting up the room and snacks for us.

Rink 1

Paul Jones, Peter Wells and Bryan Ogilvie managed to halve the ends but a bare patch in the middle saw them trail in 11 - 19.

Rink 2

Yvonne Twomey, Pat Clements and Dave Bryant also managed to halve the ends and only went down by two shots 10 - 12.

Rink 3

Paul Jelfs, Pete Sutton and Kevin Mytton also split the ends in what was a very tight game but two fours towards the end saw them home 17 - 10.  Lets hope that they can recreate this form at 09.00 at Leamington on Saturday.

Rink 4

Dave Drinkwater, Mick Wilkins and Ted Eley took 11 ends including a six on the tenth end which set them on course  for an 11 point victory 21 - 10.

Rink 5

Steve Clarke, Richard Lawrence and Pete Griffin struggled against tough opposition and could only muster five ends to come in 9 - 21.

Altogether an enjoyable and profitable evening which everyone seemed to enjoy.

Tuesday 19th August at home to Chadlington

What a difference a week makes as on the previous Tuesday at Woodford - cum - Membris we played in 33C and last night by the end of play it was less than half that.  The Captain's decision to wear shorts was debatable verging on regrettable!   Our visitors could only raise three triples which matched our availability as we had three withdrawals over the weekend.  We went down two triples to one but a good win on the captain's rink gave us a 12 point winning margin of 60 - 48.

Rink 1

Steve Clarke, David Bryant and Pete Griffin had a tight game and were two points in the lead going into the last end but the opposition picked up a three and we trailed in 20 - 21.

Rink 2

Yvonne Twomey, Mick Wilkins and Chris Twomey were always in control and took 11 ends which together with a magnificent seven saw them home winners 28 - 12.

Rink 3

Dave Drinkwater, Richard Lawrence and Bryan Ogilvie were in touch all the way through and despite picking up a 4 and a 3 had to contend themselves with second place coming in 12 - 15.

As mentioned above it was a fairly cool evening but played in a good "spirit" and on this subject many thanks to Jenny and Tony Bird

Tuesday 12th away to Woodford - cum - Membris

The home game on 19th July had to be cancelled due to rain so it was somewhat ironical that we played the away leg on possibly the hottest day of the year.  By the time we started it was beginning to cool down but we agreed to play 16 ends which proved a good decision as the light was starting to fade towards the end of play.

Due to a shortage of skips Mick Wilkins had to step into the breech and I trust that he enjoyed the experience.  Our hosts managed to field 14 players, which we matched, so we played two triples and two rinks.  We won 3 rinks to 1 with an overall score of 69 - 45.  It was a very quiet evening with barely a sound as cricket and football were having a night off and we were able to park nearby for a change.

Rink 1

Yvonne Twomey, Tony Bird and Chris Twomey were in control from the off and took 10 of the 16 ends to hand in a score of 16 - 9.

Rink 4

Sandra Shallis, David Drinkwater, Richard Lawrence and Phil French were never troubled and won 12 ends to come home victorious 29 - 7 and claim the bragging rights..

Rink 5

Jill Hart, Paul Jones and Bryan Ogilvie had a tight game until the 13th end when they picked up a 7 to claim 9 ends and a winning score of 17 - 10.

Rink 6

Chris Shallis, Steve Clarke, Cliff Hall and Mick Wilkins faced tough opposition and could only muster 4 ends and trailed in 7 - 19.

Overall a very pleasant and successful evening which everyone seemed to enjoy.

Saturday 9th August away to Little Compton

Saturday saw us travel to Little Compton for our return game, having previously having a convincing win at home in mid April.  The conditions were sunny but breezy afternoon and the trip there contained some beautiful countryside views.  The game should have been 4 triples, but Little Compton could only muster 9 players, so a huge thanks to John Standen and Steve Clarke who kindly volunteered to play for the opposition, allowing us to play 2 rinks and 1 triple.  The green was extremely quick, almost like playing indoors, but as it transpired this did not prevent us from winning the game 56-40.

Rink 3  -  Lead  -  Yvonne Twomey

               No. 2  -  Hannah O'Donoghue

               No. 3  -  James O'Donoghue

               Skip    -  Chris Twomey

It was nice to see Hannah and James back on the green but they struggled against stiff opposition.  The first half of the game was extremely close and, after 10 ends we were only losing by 1 shot, 8-9.  Unfortunately we could only win 2 of the remaining 8 ends and went down 10-19.

Rink 4  -  Lead  -  Dave Drinkwater

               No. 2  -  Sandra Challis

               No. 3  -  Mick Wilkins

               Skip    -  Bryan Ogilvie

The Captains rink took a strangle hold on the game from the start and were leading 7-0 after 4 ends and only allowed the opposition to win 6 of the 18 ends and finished comfortable winners 22-8.

Rink 5  -  Lead  -  Chris Shallis

               No. 2  -  Cliff Hall

               Skip    -  Dave Bryant

A very tight game over the first 8 ends, when the score was 7-7.  We then allowed the opposition to creep ahead over the next 5 ends and were down 13-7 down after 11 ends, but the dreaded 13 struck the opposition and we won the remaining 7 ends and ran out comfortable winners 24-13, scoring 11 over the last 3 ends.

A very pleasant afternoon, enjoyed by all ending in a very good result, giving us the double against a side who we don't always do well against when we play them at their ground.

Saturday 2nd August away to Southam

A pleasant day saw us visit Southam last Saturday.  The afternoon did not start too well as the Captain got the start time wrong, we arrived at 1.55 only for the opposition asking if we had got lost, as the actual start time was scheduled for 2.0pm.  It did not improve that much as, unfortunately we lost the game 63-50.  This is now the 3rd year we have played at the new green, curtesy of HS2, but I have to say, nothing much has changed with regard to HS2, I think the only change is that the mounds of dirt keep moving from one position to another.  Like Brackley the previous Saturday, they only wished to play 16 ends which, had we played the usual 18, may have had a different result,, as the last 3 ends on 3 of the rinks say us score 15 shots, which means we were just getting into our stride!

Rink 2  -  Lead  -  Jill Hart

               No. 2  -  Mick Wilkins

               Skip    -  Graham Tyrrell

It was nice to see Jill back on the green, but they were up against stiff opposition and never really got into the game and lost 26-4.

Rink 3  -  Lead  -  Tony Bird

               No. 2  -  James O'Donoghue

               Skip    -  Mark Stokes

Here too it was very nice to see James back on the green and they seemed to be running away with the game but conceded a 6 on the 11th end, which made the score 13-10 to us, but as I mentioned earlier we finished strongly winning 4 of the remaining 5 ends and coming home comfortable winners 20-11.

Rink 4  -  Lead  -  Richard Lawrence

               No. 2  -  Chris Shallis

               Skip    -  Dave Bryant

We were always in control and let the opposition win only 6 of the 16 ends and came home easy winners 19-11 and yet again we scored 6 shots over the last 3 ends.

Rink 5  -  Lead  -  Sandra Shallis

               No. 2  -  Dave Drinkwater

               Skip    -  Bryan Ogilvie

As well as getting the start time incorrect the Captain could not get going and only won 5 of the 16 ends, but did pick up 4 shots over the last 2 ends, but went down 15-7.

Looking on the positive side although we lost by 13 shots, we won by 16 shots when they came to us earlier in the season.
